Episode 3, Behind the Scenes

I loved this couple and i loved this loft, but it was massive and totally empty.  The week started out great, they are super easy to talk to and were really excited on camera (note to future clients, bring on the excitement).  Mica does video car review videos for blue-book so he's used to being on camera and Evee has SUCH an adorable personality so it made shooting really easy.  No awkwardness and just total fun.  The diagnostic was in general what i had planned so no MAJOR changes.  I knew that Evee loved kitsch and cute and playfulness, all of the accessories that they did have were vintage 50's.  She loved the look of the 50's diner with the boomerang formica and the crazy bright colors so i was psyched.  And then Micah liked things that were similar, but more masculine and he wanted to be more grown up - but still really fun.  Plus he's a car guy and liked things that function and moving parts and gadgety type things, flux capacitors, defibulators you get the idea. These two weren't looking for a loft-space full of whites and chromes. They wanted color, and tons of vintage. and that made me really happy.

Before:

First look:

Final look:

I've had a couple people tell me that they prefer first look and i personally think its super super fun, but just not terribly sophisticated, and i think second look is still really playful but just a bit more grown up.

I'll go over resources tomorrow and the general play by play.  I have to run. This is week four in a row of shooting 6 day weeks and seventh day shopping so this little stylist is amped up for one more week and then a couple weeks of prep.

And to all of you who were at the Rose Bowl who came up to me and said nice things, thank you so much.  Now that the show is airing people are recognizing me more and i can tell that a lot of people don't want to bother me, but its truly not a bother and makes me feel really good.  I work so hard and i don't read the reviews so i just hope its well received. All my friends and family of course are going to tell me they love it, but when strangers come up to me and go out of their way to tell me that is their favorite show on hgtv in years, yeah...that makes me feel REALLY good.

All of the positive comments left here are amazing and every single one of them makes my day, but if you guys have a second, tell HGTV. i want them to know that people are excited and like the show.  So, perhaps during a commercial break of the Bachelor Finale tonight, go to facebook, and 'like' hgtv (there are a few and its the one with 1.3 million 'likers') and tell them what you think.

Thanks again so much for all the emails, comments, tweets and blog posts.  During the break week i have a big plan of emailing everyone back and commenting and blogging about all those who do it for me.  It really helps, i promise.

xx

This was the best episode yet, they just keep getting better and better!

My only complaint about the show so far is that it's just too short! I love all of the components of the show but with only 20-25 minutes of airtime and 2 whole designs it feels rushed. I know they tried giving Antonio an hour and obviously decided that wasn't working but imo that was because there was too much focus on him as a "character" and not on the design.

That loft was so amazing, and you just enhanced the natural beauty. My husband actually sat down with me to watch this weekend's show. He loved it, and let me tell you this guy is NOT into design shows. If you get the urge to come to Las Vegas holla at your girl!!!!

Yours is the show that makes me watch HGTV again. Thanks for the inspiration!

Another great job Emily....loved it all. I want the old toy cars and a lot of that other stuff!!! And the colors were fantastic. I would have had a hard time deciding between the two looks. But, I was so confused by the airing schedule. Sometimes during the night they showed episode 1....what was that all about? Shouldn't Episode 3 been on all three hours?????

I love the first look! I'm filing it away for a future playroom or basement family room inspiration.

Both looks were awesome! It was really helpful for me to see two furniture configurations in the same space, because sometimes it's hard to imagine how to place furniture when there are difficult windows/doorways to consider. I liked both of the couch-chair configurations equally. It must be so hard for you to decide what the final look will be! I thought the globe collection was genius in both spaces.

The HGTV message boards are always full of whiners so if you ever visit, don't take them seriously (like in the Dream Home section, people complain--yes COMPLAIN--that the house is worth too much money). I went and left some feedback there for you for good measure, though. I hope HGTV gets the message that your manner and style are speaking to an under-served viewership! As I said in my message board comment, enough with HGTV segments about installing pot lights! Or mod-podging night stands with raffia! Or shopping for everything at Ikea! Gimme some hot flea market action and whimsy plz.

This was AMAZING. I love how you've been combining valuable pieces with more affordable ones, because mama's gotta have her bling (or reupholstered midcentury sofa, whatever). I wish your episodes were two hours long. Dave is smitten, too...every time you come on, he creeps over to the couch and whispers, "SECRETS...from a stylist" in this creepy voice.

Will DEFINITELY "like" you during the Bach tonight!!!

Great episode Emily. I am super duper in love with that rug. I hope tomorrow blog post talks about where you got it and how much. I've been look up and down for one for my bedroom. Keep up the great work because I am loving your show!!!

Major transformation! Love the result!

In the episodes you've filmed so far, have you had anyone ask you NOT to do a second look because they were so happy with the first one? I think it's funny that I would never describe my own style or preferences as vintage or thrift, but I always love your designs. :)

I love your show! I love to play the reveals back in slow motion to get all the details. So great!

this was my favorite episode yet - so much character and fun for an industrial space....very unexpected! fabulous room emily!

to say i was excited for your show to premiere would be the understatment of my year ... and i'm proud to say ... i haven't missed an episode yet! i'm a HUGE super duper fan and almost always find myself drooling over not only what you do with these living spaces, but also what you're wearing! total adorableness. (see? so cute i even had to make up a word!)

i've loved every space, but this loft in particular since it's a dream of mine to live in a brick-exposed space here in good ol' salt lake city, utah ... so i got a lot of ideas for my future dream home and i must admit, although i LOVED the end result, i my heart panged along with miss evee's with the blue formica table went bye-bye.

keep up the AMAZING work and just know that you do what you do so so well! :)

bex.

I liked the way this room turned out more than I thought I would (not a fan of "kitsch"). You pulled everything together so it looked like a grown up & functional space and not like a flea market or storage room :) I'll make it a priority to let HGTV know how much I love your show!

I am wondering what the dimension were for the dinning table, the one they ended up with not the Formica one {I totally agree with your decision btw} ?

The room turned out beautiful and I love when your show turns up on my dvr, it's a great treat !

I loved the furniture layout in the den on the first reveal. I think the second reveal was amazing but I was sad to see the chair leave it's little nook beside the wall. It really showed off the structure of the wall and that cool wood beam.

It's so fun to watch you incorporate styles. I think that is a difficult task! I love your idea for evaluating everyone's style too. Keep it up! I can't wait to see more.

message sent to hgtv, check. stay lovely.

Finally getting to see the full episodes online (we're trying the no cable thing) and I'm so in love with the show! I love how honest and casual you are on air....so refreshing. Anyways, after seeing this episode I am DYING to know where that architectural salvage yard is that you visited!!!! I must go there asap. Cross-streets, a llink, or even just the name would be awesome! Those are the kind of places that are so hard to find on your own, unless you 'know' someone like you!!! Well, keep up the good work....we're huge fans!

finally caught up. Where were the blue chairs from?

Oh my. I just LOVE this episode. I had to search and go back to this post just to let you know how much i loved this one. Your show is so unique and awesome and i love how vintage inspired it is! I hopefully plan to be an architect/interior designer and you inspire me SO MUCH! Keep doin what you do!
