18 Comments Aight. Sorry for the delay, my interweb was down and then i went and hung out in portland for a few days - you know, spent some time cursing myself for not living here. I have the genius idea of doing some episodes up here, i mean, its the 'it' city right now, you can't tell me it wouldn't be awesome for all involved.
Oh and everybody's been emailing asking when the show is airing, and while i don't have an exact date, expect end of february early March for the series to start airing. And I think its on saturday night during the 'Design Studio', which is like being part of thursday night NBC lineup with Friends in the 90's, up there with Candace, Genevieve, David and Antonio. As soon as the exact date is announced you'll be the first to know, but don't worry - we are good to go, i've shot 5 episodes and starting January 17th we shoot the next 21 until september.
So Orlando and I woke up real early, rented a 12 foot truck and got on the road by 7:30. First we Went to the Salvation Army outlet store, which was fine, but i think we just got a lamp for $12. Then we headed to Hemet where we hit some thrift stores.
Then I met up with Morgan from The Brick House and bought some loot from her. Her house is even more awesome in person, by the way. Pretty jealous. So she sold me this stuff:

then i headed to gypsyland where i bought, like A LOT:

Then over to Cathedral City to the Perez Shopping district where i spent a lot of time at Modern Spaces:
got me a pair of perfectly upholstered vintage milo baughman chairs for $500 - which is not nothing, for sure, but i try to keep each chair betwen $300-$400 so two for $500 is not bad.
So here is the mini resource list, you'll have to google for addresses, sorry i'm bad at the technical part of blogging.
All the angel views thrift stores: there is one in Palm Springs and one in Cathedral City. All the Revivals thrift stores (and this is where you get steals, where they don't know what they have). Gypsyland in Desert Hot Springs is huge and great for accessories/artwork/lighting. They aren't that cheap, but its a trip and definitely worth the stop. And Estate Sale Company in Palm Springs, New 2 You in Cathedral City, and the rest of the Perez Design District (where Modern Spaces is) is pretty good, too. Ooh and Victoria's antique mall.

Yes! P-town rulz! Think of all the clean air and trees that you miss, food carts as far as the eye can see, people who walk (yes, walk) down the street and say hi because it's sunny. Because that's what we do! Stumptown coffee, sustainable fill-in-the-blank, neighborhoods with soul, kick ass food everywhere and well..........Phew! Sorry, but I love my life here and have lived in LA so I can compare a bit. Some day in the distant future when you have an HDTV empire I hope you and your man move back.:)
Much love from the beautiful, drizzly NW,
KW
PS: Happy New Year!!! I really can't wait to see your show.
Can I ask a technical question? Where do you get the money to buy all this fabulous stuff & do you have a budget!? Does the show pay for it, or do you pay for it? What do you do with the stuff that you don't use??? :) :)
PS. Hopefully this question doesn't come across snarky. I just really want to know because I'm really jealous of that beautiful yellow dresser. And I'm just curious about how the process works.
Thanks for the blog! I enjoy reading about your thrifting adventures.
The yellow on that campaign dresser is so *GREAT*...no wonder you love her! (c:

I can't wait 'til your show airs! BTW, nothing is better than when 2 really awesome bloggers join forces to find some amazing stuff. Hope you and Morgan continue to work together--it's so fun to read about!
I am so jealous! Great loot you got there and you got to see Morgan's place in person.
So that yellow dresser! I happened to buy one a few months ago in my hometown of Rockford, IL as the 5 chest of drawers version for $30 from Craigslist. Yellow and all original. Right now it's holding blankets in my basement because my husband doesn't get my design motif at the given moment. I just forwarded this post to him so maybe he will get it now!!! :)
You are awesome. I myself love thrifting and such. So finding your blog is like heaven! Can't wait to watch your show!
Please oh PLEASE come to Portland!
...and while your in PDX just scoot a little farther north to Bellingham! I have 750 sqaure feet looking out at the San Jaun Islands that could use a tweak! I'd even let you pet my cats!
Thanks for sharing your thrift store resources. I especially enjoy your how-tos (such as how to find an upholsterer/what to ask) and overall generosity of spirit.
I love your blog and look forward to seeing more of your show later this year.
-From a longtime lurker, first time poster.
smart to score some stuff from Morgan. That is a dream business of mine. Find cool shiz and sell.
Dude, can we talk about the fact that for the ENTIRE first part of my life when I could've been thrifting while visiting my grandparents in PS, I was instead burning myself by the pool?? Not to mention the fact that I could've received, oh, you know, a TON of amazing mid-century pieces from the good architect himself, but no, I was too young...and now my cousins throw it in my face. Bastards.
Portland - yes, yes, yes! And we have great resources and shops for outfitting said episodes. :)
I really like the gold chest.

I just discovered your blog last Wednesday via The Brick House. I was having fun looking through all your posts when I came across this one. I was surprised to see the brassy trunk. I just bought one today at a thrift store! It is sitting here in front of me right now and it makes me happy (giddy actually) every time I look at it. My husband thought it was too 80’s but now I feel completely vindicated, thank you! How do you plan on using it?
Oh, and I am drooling over the campaign chest. Gorgeous.
Just returned from Palm Desert to my home in Portland. Visited many of your suggested thrift stores yesterday and had the best time!!! Can't wait to visit my folks again next year to hit the spots we missed yesterday - if only there were more hours in the day... Anyways, thanks for sharing the great shops - dropped your name just in case it helps you. PLEASE do a special in PDX, I have a basement that needs your touch. Best of luck, loving the show, it's DVR'd religiously each week!
What a find. I am an avid viewer of contemporary furniture as they are all collector's items. furniture repair nyc
A pair of perfectly upholstered vintage milo baughman chairs for $500 is a great deal in that condition. When you buy one of these in furniture stores in los angeles they will cost a lot more.
