Untamed Modern Funk, Part Deaux

Alright, so lets head on into the Dining room. The untamed modern funky dining room.

Their table was kinda good, but yes, could go 'Contemporary Board room' really easily.

The yellow painting was done by Orlando, who is the best.  Just generally, the best. Check his blog, people, you will fall in love.

And the print next to it is from Etsy, buy it (or one by the same artist, Virginia Kraljevic here)

I realized i don't have any pulled back shots, sorry.  But i will say that those chairs (the wood ones, not the grey ones) were dope and i would have given my middle left toe to have found 6 of those instead of the 4 i found at the flea market.  I feel like that toe is kinda unnecessary.  Pinky? yes.  But that one i could have sacrificed.  Those chairs were $50 each, all four for $180. I'm so sorry i don't have a better picture.  When my computer crashed i lost all my flea market shots.  blast.

I painted the base white, I KNOW, I KNOW, sometimes i paint things white. Get over it.  It needed it.  It was kinda cherry wood before and wasn't working for me at all.  White freshened it up a ton and brought it into the 21st century.  Check out that leather chess set... I've been hoarding this for a while. Bought it for $5 at the flea market for myself....(because you play chess so often, emily? and when you do you prefer it on a handmade leather chess set?)

shut up.  maybe.

Its good, though, right?

This incredible chandy is from Velocity Art and Design and I love love love it.  Link Here.    It was totally perfect for them...... 'funky' but modern.  We did the most hilarious thing putting it together though.  It had a sticker on every single socket thingy and i was all, this is stupid why would you put a sticker on each one of these for someone to take off? then when we went to put in the bulbs we realized that each socket has basically a different sized bulb...not all of them, but it was kinda hilarious.  So if you have the fortune to buy this guy, don't take off the stickers until after you bulb it.  That's a new verb, by the way.  bulbing it.

Oh, i've got a good one:

How many prop stylist does it take to change a light bulb?

'Oh, hmmm....i don't know....what do you think?'   (that one really kills it at a photo shoot, by the way).

Anyway, here's a few more from this space.  Remember all photos by Mark Champion.  Heeeeee is the champion...my friend......and he'll keep on shooting....til the end. dun, dun, dun dun....

Um, look how cute that little elephant teapot with the peonies is? i want to eat it.  And that print is by Ashley G, which i ordered on Etsy.  Her stuff is great, see  it here.

OH and i misquoted the rug price yesterday.  First of all it you can buy it here  And secondly it was 8x10 for $698, which i realize isn't nothing, but for an 8x10 graphic fun and 'haven't seen a ton' rug, that is pretty pretty good.

The yellow paint color by the way is Glidden 'Fresh Pineapple, many of you asked.  Yellow can be tricky and my assistants can tell you, i don't like a butter yellow, so this one is really acid-y which i like.

When i first painted the front of those shelves teal it looked like crazytown.  I knew it instantly but lived with it for a couple hours before i decided it really had to go.  I think i was trying to push it for Kirk and Joni, so it was as unique as possible, but it just looked silly and like i was trying too hard.  Which i was.

What you missed:

1. They needed a sofa-bed of some sort for Joni's siblings to be able to visit so when Joni saw that the sofa pulled out, serious tears.  I mean, dripping off your chin.  Which makes a stylist really really happy.

2.  They wrote and sang me a song called 'Secrets from a Stylist'  It was on camera so i'm super super bummed it didn't make it in because it was sweet, hilarious and kinda awesome.  They harmonized and everything.

Overall, such a totally totally fun episode.  One i was nervous about, but ended up really great in every way.

I'm in New York, being sported by Brizo with a bunch of my favorite bloggers (to be named later, i don't want to forget any and then feel bad).  The weather here blows, but sometimes its kinda nice to just hole up in a hotel, watch 'Prom' (2011) and get back on the blog.

Because i'm back, people.  Expect daily original content, perhaps even with some personality again. Later, 'phoning it in, Emily'.  Hello 'non-burnt out Emily'.

Oh and starting next week when i get back i'm starting my new interior design clients.  I've already assembled a team of associates, but looking for interns still. Send a resume through the 'contact' form. And for those of you who already have, don't worry i haven't interviewed anybody yet.  Will do probably next week.

And if you live in the LA area and want some secrets done to your house by yours truly and my team, fill out the 'Design Services' form from the link across the top of the blog and somebody will get back to you asap.

Emily!!!!!! I love love lurvvvvvvvv this!!!! This was my favorite episode yet. With the exception of the hand chair, everything in this room was me. Whenever people say they like African items, most designers panic and throw a lot of stereotypical stuff in the room. But you hit the nail on the head and did an amazing job, Any chance you can post the video that the couple sent in but didn't air on your site. This couple was fantastic. Love them. Love you. Going now to study the pics again!

I pretty much love every room you've ever designed, but my favorites are always the ones that use combinations of blue and yellow tones. It has inspired my own living room -- but unfortunately I'm stuck with a hand-me-down tan leather couch and can't afford a fabulous blue sofa like the ones you've used in the past.

Hey, cool -- I bought two Etsy prints from Ashley G for my own apartment a couple months ago. Love it.

Okay, I never am one to comment on "PRO" blogs, but I just wanted to give you a shout out. I am a big fan of your show and watch you online when I'm working out. Is that weird I just wrote that? Here's the thing, you are very fun to watch. You are normal and funny, and I appreciate that. And, I love the new idea of the show. It was exciting back before when you did two ENTIRELY different looks then merged them, but just seemed so exhausting and I'd keep thinking, "Wow, all that work!?!" So, I'm a fan of the new concept. It works and it's still so great. Also, I love the tips you suggest for the layman. Great work, all around.

I've been following your blog for the past few months and enjoy it too. I know you wrote on this last one that you were going to start to do DAILY posting all with original content. wow. I am busy, but I guarantee you are 15 times busier. You have lots of fans who appreciate who you are and what you're doing, and I'm pretty sure we'll all still be here even if you don't post daily. Just sayin'... To think about all the filming, decorating, and traveling you do---it makes me want to take a nap FOR you! :)

Anyway, great work. Sorry for the novel. I'm a big fan. Thank you for letting us in on your life!

I love this room!

Are you going to review the Design Star episode from this week? I totally love when you do that. I want to see who you are pulling for!

I must know where you got the table lamp!

Great episode! You made a difficult challenge look effortless but from reading these posts it clearly wasn't. I too would also love to hear your take on the DS tiny house challenge since it was cut off on the HGTV vlog. Since you are getting back to your interior design clients what does that mean for a third season of SFAS? Your last post about it mentioned it wasn't official & I'm starting to get worried. HGTV needs more original shows like yours and less house hunting, room crashing, party planning and decorating Dallas!

Agree with Lucy that SFAS is a breath of fresh hair on HGTV. House Hunters and the "Crashers" franchise are SOOOOOOO overplayed. There are less and less design shows on HGTV and more Real Estate/Construction shows than we need.

Love you Emily and love your work too but, I'm sorry, it's "part deux" and not "part deaux"

Love this room!! And I am another one dying to hear what you think of the last two design stars. My Husband and I agree that neither of them is as cool as you, BUT I'd love to hear your take on your new coworker. Aka, I guess I am asking you to gossip.

this might be my favorite room so far...who was the original yellow light bulb painting you had in the dining room by?

September 10, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJackson

I am totally sold on this collection of pieces, and the color palette, and everything really. When I'm rich and famous, I'll hire Emily to design my house.

Does Orlando sell his work anywhere? I have been obsessed with the yellow painting since the episode aired, and have been waiting for your blog follow up in the hopes that the artist had an etsy page.

hi Emily! you are one of my faves on HGTV and i am seriously bummed that they do not show enough of you. love your work and your show is never boring or redundant. i love that you blog as well. as a rule i don't read blogs, i don't have the time but yours is exciting and makes me feel as tho i'm the camera man on set lol. anyways, i love the coffee table from this modern untamed episode and would love to get one...i saw that you said it's from rose bowl, but i am unable to find a website. if you have the time, would you please let me know if they have one? or their location. something that could help me get one of those awesome tables!! thanks loads!!

September 13, 2011 | Unregistered Commentershornelle

Agh, I was so excited to find the episode where you used those chairs, I SO loved them and want to buy them, so I am super bummed they were flea market ones :( I mean, flea markets are cool, and maybe I can find something similar if I search, but I wanted to get them NOW. Ok, complaining done. I should also say that I am completely fascinated with your show and your design style in general seems so similar to what mine would be if I could design at all. So, you have a fan, and I'm glad I found your blog!!
